Aethel Audio vs NotebookLM
NotebookLM is Google's research notebook. It answers questions about the sources you add and can turn them into Audio Overviews: podcast-style conversations that summarise and discuss the material. That is a great way to get the gist of many sources quickly. Aethel does something different: it reads the document itself, sentence by sentence, with the equations spoken and the current sentence highlighted. Use NotebookLM to decide what to read; use Aethel to actually read it.

Choose NotebookLM if…
- • You want a quick overview of many papers before choosing what to read.
- • You want to ask questions across a whole collection of sources.
- • You don't need the exact text, just the main points.
- • You want a free tool: NotebookLM works with a Google account.
Choose Aethel if…
- • You need the details: an exam, a derivation, a method you will implement.
- • You want to hear the equations, not a paraphrase of them.
- • You want to read and listen at the same time.
Test it on your hardest page
The fairest comparison is your own material. Import the same maths-heavy chapter into both and listen to a page with equations. Here is what Aethel says for a classic:
Attention(Q, K, V) = softmax(QKᵀ / √dₖ)V
Aethel says
Attention of Q, K, V equals softmax of the quantity QK transpose over the square root of d sub k, times V
Vaswani et al., “Attention Is All You Need”, NeurIPS 2017, equation 1
Questions
Can I use NotebookLM and Aethel together?
Yes, and it works well: get the overview from NotebookLM, then listen to the sections that matter in Aethel, with the equations read properly.
Does Aethel summarise too?
Only when you ask. Explanations, examples and (on Executive) dossiers are separate from the narration, so you always know which words are the author's.
