Research papers · arXiv

Listen to papers without losing the maths.

Paste an arXiv link or upload a text-based PDF. Aethel reads the paper in order, says equations the way a lecturer would, describes figures and tables where the text cites them, and lets you stop on any sentence to ask what it means.

Five books and an hour of narration free. No card needed.

The problem

Text-to-speech stumbles on notation

Most readers spell symbols out or skip them, so “softmax(QKᵀ/√dₖ)V” turns into noise and the argument is lost.

Figures are where the result is

Audio that ignores a figure skips the evidence. A paper read without its tables is half a paper.

Reading time competes with everything else

The reading list grows faster than desk time. Commutes, walks and the gym are hours you could use.

How Aethel helps

arXiv in one step

Paste https://arxiv.org/abs/… on the Add page and the PDF is imported for you. Any other text-based PDF can be uploaded directly.

Equations read as maths

Subscripts, powers, fractions, sums and conditional probability are spoken in words, and the printed formula stays on screen.

Figures and tables in context

Figures, tables and captions stay next to the paragraph that cites them, with a short spoken description.

Ask, then remember

Tap a passage for an explanation, a rephrasing or a worked example. Each section you open also gets review cards, spaced over days so the ideas stick.

What you will hear

These are produced live by the same speech engine the app uses. Press Listen to hear them in your device's voice; in the app you choose a studio or ElevenLabs voice.

Machine learning

Attention(Q, K, V) = softmax(QKᵀ / √dₖ)V

Aethel says

Attention of Q, K, V equals softmax of the quantity QK transpose over the square root of d sub k, times V

Vaswani et al., “Attention Is All You Need”, NeurIPS 2017, equation 1

Probability

P(A|B) = P(B|A) P(A) / P(B)

Aethel says

P of A given B equals P of B given A, times P of A, over P of B

Statistics

σ² = (1/n) Σᵢ (xᵢ − μ)²

Aethel says

sigma squared equals the quantity 1 over n, the sum over i of the quantity x sub i minus mu, squared

Questions

Which arXiv links work?

Abstract, HTML and PDF links to a paper, such as arxiv.org/abs/1706.03762. Aethel downloads the PDF from arXiv and imports it like an uploaded file.

Does it work with scanned papers?

Not yet. The PDF needs selectable text, which almost every paper produced with LaTeX or Word has. Scanned pages without a text layer can't be read because OCR is not available yet.

Is the narration a summary?

No. Aethel reads the paper itself, in order. Summaries, explanations and examples are separate and only appear when you ask for them.
