Aethel Audio vs Voice Dream Reader

Voice Dream Reader is a long-standing reading app for Apple devices, loved by readers who rely on text-to-speech for accessibility: it has extensive voice, display and navigation settings and reads many document formats. Aethel is a newer, narrower tool for technical study: equations spoken as maths, figures described, explanations and review cards, in a web app that runs on any device.

Test it on your hardest page

The fairest comparison is your own material. Import the same maths-heavy chapter into both and listen to a page with equations. Here is what Aethel says for a classic:

Machine learning

Attention(Q, K, V) = softmax(QKᵀ / √dₖ)V

Aethel says

Attention of Q, K, V equals softmax of the quantity QK transpose over the square root of d sub k, times V

Vaswani et al., “Attention Is All You Need”, NeurIPS 2017, equation 1

Questions

Does Aethel work with VoiceOver?

Aethel is a web app with labelled controls, but it has not been formally audited with every screen reader. If something doesn't work with your setup, tell us and we will fix it.

Can I use Aethel without a connection?

Yes, for chapters you saved offline beforehand. Narration is generated online, then stored on the device.
