Ideal gas law
Pressure times volume equals the amount of gas times the gas constant times the temperature.
PV = nRT
Aethel says
P V equals n R T
What it says
Heat a gas in a closed container and its pressure rises; let it expand at constant temperature and its pressure falls. The law holds well for gases at low pressure and high temperature.
Symbol by symbol
| Symbol | Say it | Means |
|---|---|---|
| P | P | the pressure |
| V | V | the volume |
| n | n | the amount of gas, in moles |
| R | R | the gas constant, about 8.314 J/(mol·K) |
| T | T | the absolute temperature, in kelvin |
Where you meet it
Chemistry and thermodynamics.
Questions
How do you say Ideal gas law out loud?
PV = nRT is read: “P V equals n R T.” That is exactly what Aethel says when it meets the formula in a book.
What does P mean in Ideal gas law?
P (said “P”) is the pressure.
What does V mean in Ideal gas law?
V (said “V”) is the volume.
Can I listen to the equations in my own textbook like this?
Yes. Upload a PDF, EPUB or text file and Aethel reads it aloud with every equation spoken as maths, the way it reads this one, and highlights each sentence as it goes. You can start free.
